On Tuesday evening, the Baltimore Ravens, needing help at tackle after Eugene Monroe retired, signed Jake Long. Long was a perennial Pro Bowler for the first few years in Miami with the Dolphins but then injuries took their toll and he hasn’t been the same player since.
Last year Long was signed by the Atlanta Falcons but he played a measly 11 snaps. While he won’t be expected to start, Long will provide veteran cover at left tackle behind first round pick Ronnie Stanley.
Long is saying all the right things. He commented: “This is the healthiest and best I’ve felt in probably about five, six years. My knee’s back. I’ve just been working out, feeling good and ready for the opportunity when it comes along.”
If Long can regain the level of play that saw him make four Pro Bowls and stay injury free (that’s a big if for a player that has suffered back-to-back torn ACLs) then he could be a great signing.
However, one NFL Executive quote once said on Long’s health: “Horrible. Was horrible before he signed in St. Louis. Mess.”
Jonathan Cumbleton first got into the game aged 12 when he started playing touch football for the Northants Storm and soon fell in love with the game. His favourite team is the Philadelphia Eagles, but he also has a soft spot for the Buffalo Bills as they were the first team he ever watched live. His favourite all time players are Randall Cunningham and Brian Dawkins. Jonathan can be contacted on Twitter@Cumbleton
