It must be December. For CFL fans the season is over and the off-season is in full swing. This time of year means one other thing too. In the run up to the festive season the CFL reveals its own pre-Christmas stars. To that end the Canadian Football league has named the players who have been selected as the 2017 CFL All-Stars. The All-Stars were selected by the Football Reporters of Canada (FRC) and the league’s head coaches.
Perhaps the least surprising decision of all was to have league MOP, ( Edmonton Eskimos quarterback Mike Reilly) be the starting QB on this imaginary team. Alongside that the winners of the 2017 Most Outstanding Offensive Lineman, Stanley Bryant of the Blue Bombers, Most Outstanding Defensive Player, Alex Singleton of the Stamps, and Most Outstanding Special Teams Player, Roy Finch, also of the Stamps all found a place. Most Outstanding Rookie James Wilder Jr of the Argos however missed out on a spot to the Most Outstanding Canadian Andrew Harris of the Blue Bombers at the running back slot.
In total 6 players from the Calgary Stampeders were chosen, 5 from the Edmonton Eskimos and Winnipeg Blue Bombers, 4 from the Saskatchewan Roughriders, 3 from the BC Lions and Toronto Argonauts and 1 from the Ottawa REDBLACKS.
Whenever selections like this are made it is always likely to cause a debate. There were no selections for players from either Montreal or Hamilton. A fact not lost on Ti-Cats defensive back Richard Leonard who tweeted his displeasure calling it a ‘Big Joke’ that he was overlooked. Who would he have been picked instead of I wonder? We’ll never know, but it looks like Leonard has all the motivation he needs to show CFL watchers just how wrong they were in his opinion.
One of the starkest factors in this list too, is that not only have half of the East Division teams been sidelined but that the picks were made 23 to 4 overall in favour of the West! Oh well, – fans of the East Division will just have to ‘make do’ with having seen Eastern teams take home the last 2 Grey Cups.
